The vicious circle

 Chinedu graduated top of his class.

First-class in Electrical Engineering. NYSC in Abuja. He thought his life was finally about to start. Until he started applying for jobs. 50 applications. No response. If your President is not performing well:

-criticize him bitterly

-tackle him harshly

-engage him vigorously

-condemn his missteps, his inaction

It is your duty. It is your obligation to your country. If you are criticized by his supporters for doing these things, swat them like flies for you are answerable only to your conscience. Learn from how I handle them if they come after me for criticizing President Buhari. Or how I handle your camp when I press your buttons and unleash you.

If there is anything your President does that seems to be positive or the right step in the right direction:

-scrutinize it

-point out what could be done to make it even better

-point out where there could be improvement

-encourage more of such steps and actions

Then reactivate your default mode: vigilance.

However, if the thought, just the mere thought, that your President has taken two right steps in the right direction in two consecutive days - the N-Power jobs and the career diplomats thingy - throws you into pathological spasms; gives you chest pain; increases your blood pressure, and you are all over the airwaves physically writhing in pain; if two positive headlines devolving from your President's steps are giving you Zika, Lassa, and Ebola and you are reacting like someone bereaved, then, my friend, this is no longer about country o.

It is no longer even about the man who is the object of your unquenchable hate sef. 

I'm afraid, it is now about your health. 

My brother, my sister, you go woundjure o. 

Just two steps in the right direction have taken over the headlines today, reducing your ability to saturate the airwaves with news of the President's "cancer treatment" in London and you are behaving like your world has come to an end?

Don't worry. He is human. He will make mistakes that you can criticize to your heart's content again - maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow sef. But you have to be alive and be hale and hearty to criticize his future errors, abi?

Just try and make it through today alive that you may be able to hate tomorrow, abi? Only the living can hate o.

If you allow just two news items to choke you to death today, I will say, "eeyah, so sad" but I will not miss the nkwobi appointment I have later this evening o.

Make it about country.

You will be happier.

You will live longer.

When Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999, one of those elected into Nigeria's Senate was a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG.

He stated in an interview that sitting with him in the Senate of Nigeria are people he had investigated and locked up for various criminal offenses when he was in service.

In his assertion, some of them were rogues who are unfit for decent societies, let alone in leadership positions.

He was suspended.

He was suspended for bringing the Senate to "disrepute."

Citizens did not protest.

After spending months at home without salaries and allowances, he had to apologize to the Senate and promise to be of good behaviour.

That was in 1999.

In 2016, a member of the House of Representatives raised the alarm that the nation's budget was padded.

"Padded" is euphemism for unlawful, criminal tampering and inflating of budget.

He went from the Police to the DSS. He went from radio stations to television houses. With proofs.

No security agency acted or gave him attention.

He was alone.

He was also suspended.

Buhari who was still wearing the borrowed robe of a saint pretended to see and hear nothing.

Citizens did not protest.

In 2024, a Senator raised an alarm that there was no explanations for over three trillion naira inserted into the budget.

3 trillion!

No investigation, no questions, no explanations.

The Senate has suspended that Senator.

Tomorrow, someone will declare that Nigeria's problem is spiritual.

And senseless people will still give that person attention.

It is possible God looks at some people as idiots when they stand in prayers for Nigeria.

Nigeria's problem is not spiritual. Never has been.

Nigeria's undoing is being ruled by distinguished criminals..

No one can see your future - Ademola Adigun

 He left his home early in the morning. He got to the home of his employer of 18 years. He knocked the gate. He was let in. When he knocked the door, his employer came out. His employer was surprised to see him. He had given Tunde time off to enjoy the holidays.

“Tunde, I hope there is no problem? Do you have an emergency?” He enquired.

Tunde looked at his boss. “Mr Oje, I have come to resign. God has revealed your wickedness to me. You have been using my destiny for the past 18 years. I thought you were a nice man, increasing my salary, assisting me, doing good to me. So it is my glory from heaven you were using. Madam will be serving me food, I will be happy. God has shown me the truth. Don’t expect me again. Find another person to use their destiny. God has liberated me”

Saying that.. Tunde walked away. Mr Oje looked at him in disbelief as he walked. When did Tunde start to drink alcohol? He shook his head and went upstairs to narrate the story to his wife.

Tunde went home. Narrated the story to his wife. He had done as he was instructed by the Man of God that had prophesied to his life after the end of year fasting. He felt liberated.

Time passed. Tunde couldn’t find a job as a driver. He started another career. Things were very tough. He was soon sacked from the job. He had no stamina for heavy lifting. His poverty became worse. His children were thrown out of school. There was no Mr Oje to assist in paying the fees. His condition nosedived. He became hypertensive. His inability to afford drugs soon left him paralyzed. He suffered an ischemic stroke.

The Man of God had stopped giving him attention. He couldn’t pay for special prayers or give special offerings. He was surprised that he no longer had access to the MoG.

Mr Oje leant of his condition and sent him money. Then paid for his rehabilitation sessions. He did not forget the 18 years of loyalty. He placed him on an allowance and continued paying the fees of Mr Tunde’s kids.

Tunde died after suffering a second stroke. He did apologise to Mr Oje before he passed on.

Not all you hear concerning you is true. It’s false most of the time. You become the product of what you hear and believe.

Ìgbéraga ìs a negative behavior detested by the Yorùbá. The word priide does not carry the real meaning of ìgbéraga as captured in their worldview.

Ìgbéraga ló ń ṣáájú ìparun (ìgbéraga comes before a fall) ìs a primary proverb describing the consequence of igberaga.

Ìgbéraga ìs derived from ìgbé-ara-ga (raising one's body up). This implies that each man has his appropriate height, trying to do any stuff that amounts to giving an impression to others that you are taller than your real height is ìgbéraga and the Yorùbá considers this act as a vice. This shows that everyman of any height can become oníìgbéraga. 

Physical height is metaphorical, though it is one way to exhibit igberaga, but ìgbéraga manifests in so many ways including what you say about yourself, about others and to others; how your appear to people and how you relate to others.

The Yorùbá always wish that everyman should abhors ìgbéraga because of its ultimate implication. Hence, they often say, Ìgbéraga ni ìgbéra ṣánlẹ̀ (ìgbéraga amounts to falling flat to the ground in disgrace).

The opposite of ìgbéraga is ìrẹ̀lẹ̀ - ìrẹ-ara-ẹni-sílẹ̀ (to lower oneself). Definitely if you are not showing ìgbéraga, it is because you are onírẹ̀lẹ̀ (humble). Ìrẹ̀lẹ̀, though in short circulation, is one of the greatest human virtues. According to the Yoruba belief, the ones who are onírẹ̀lẹ̀ are the ones who are lifted, ìrẹ̀lẹ̀ is a great virtue that every one should possess. 

What is observable is that, igberaga is found among all shades of people including those perceived not having anything to boast about. For instance, a poor woman was given a token to help her take care of her needs by two people. To the first she said: who begs for money from you, who told you I am a needy? To the second she said, so this is what you can give me, a whole me, please take your money. This is Ìgbéraga.

In another dimension, a man who does not value the gifts in others, who overrates himself by speaking good of only himself, who sees himself as the wisest and does not take the advice of others, the only one who is right and just, is a typical agbéraga. Such people are on their way to ìgbéra-ṣánlẹ̀. 

In your words and actions be sure you are not exhibiting igberaga because àgbà òfìfo ló ń dún woroworo (empty barrel makes the loudest noise).

 Generational wealth 

When we got to the farm we started planting. The harvest would be in 6 months. We removed weeds, we cleared soil and put in seeds. Then we would eat at the farm. We never ate the best of our harvest. We sold, kept the tubers for replanting. Baba said that is how you reap bountifully.

The next morning, Baba woke me up by 5am. He had stems in his hands. I had never seen the stems before. “What stems are these?” I asked. He looked at me in the smart way he always did when I was to be taught a lesson. “These are our future” he replied simply.

We spent 4 days planting the stems. We had to dig deeper. We had to be more careful. It was hard work requiring patience. On the 5th day as we were returning home.. Baba said “I will not be around for the harvest of these ones. It will take 25 years to full maturity. You will harvest them.”

I wondered why anyone would plant a tree that he would not be there to harvest. Was Baba ill? But we walked home.

He nurtured the stems until they became young trees. Then one day he fell ill and died shortly after. I had grown up fully matured then. We buried him in the porch of the house. My siblings and I comforted our mom.

I recall the day we planted those trees today. A company was buying one for huge amounts.  The land was tired. We needed new land. The money from the mahogany trees was going to make us very rich. Baba had secured our future with those trees. 

As they were uprooted, I took my son aside and asked him, “what do we plant that you will harvest in due date to secure the future of the next generation?”  He looked at me questioningly. Then I told him the story I have just shared. 

We must think for the generations coming after us in all we do.

Our current President during an interview saying Fuel Subsidy is a scam, he's not aware (despite being a former Petroleum Minister ) et Al,

He ended up becoming President and has paid the highest amount any Government in Nigeria has paid on same subsidy in just 5years.

Now,

We're back to deregulation,

A process we could have done with minimal stress and issue 13-15 years ago🤭😢

Most of the e-tigers and Social Media analyst on the payroll of our current handlers are barely up to 30years, lack knowledge, spew put whatever nonsense they could conjure on issues a Google search could help them provide a balance view

Fortunately,

 FUTURE TEARS (EKÚN ÒLA)

Our boys whom we sent to the universities to study are now living in hotels doing "Yahoo", defrauding people. 

They are not studying. They are "sorting". Bribing lecturers to pass. 

They only come to campus in convoys once in a while to show off. Guess what? 

Some lecturers are even worshipping them. 

Our teenage sons are now driving Benz Cars in the university. They are now "happening guys" on campus. 

The houses our sons in universities are living in now are flats and duplexes as against the self-contained that we used to know. 

Well furnished and so beautiful like the home of some state governors.

Our sons are all married in the university but single at home. 

Girls swarm around them... living with them, cooking for them, doing all sorts of things with them and for them.....

These girls are our daughters whom we sent to the universities to study. 

They are in every club and hotel in town....they are found in front of exotic cars, fastening seatbelts,  taking selfies, recording short videos and moving their tongues and lips like DOGS.

My recent research in Nigerian universities opened my eyes to this current ugly reality. I wept for the future.

These are teenagers, not even adults.

Guess what? 

We still see them as children who know nothing.

I don't want to mention names of hotels in IBADAN, LAGOS, IJEBU-ODE, ABEOKUTA, AKURE, EKITI STATE, etc where you will see your sons and daughters. They have been living there for weeks if not months.

They are not going to school. "Who school help?" Don't you get it? 

These teenagers— boys and girls are abusing drugs. Not just hemp (igbo) but cocaine, tramadols and other terrible ones.

I had once boarded a vehicle with a young girl in AGO-IWOYE who had some crack (cocaine) in her purse. 

For a reason l did not know, the police officer that stopped us for a search didn't search her but searched every other passenger. 

On the way, she brought out a drug, gently sniffed some and threw out the remaining through the window. 

I looked at her and paused, she also paused; both of us paused.  I remained deaf and dumb until I got to my destination.

Who will save this generation who painfully are our tomorrow and future of this country?

Entitlement mindset

 For the past two weeks, I stopped tipping the handymen who work for me and some of the sales guys I buy things from. 

Now I walk past security guards who used to throw salutes and smile to their ears when they see me and they feign ignorance of my presence. 

The doormen no longer open the doors with loud greetings but grudgingly as if to subtly let me know that I owe them. 

The ladies who used to fight among themselves for the opportunity to serve me at my favorite restaurant now pretend not to see me when I walk in. 

The guards at my estate gate who don’t use to search the trunk of my car, now not only do so but insist that I wane down the four glasses of my windows. 

Even my Gardner, he would appear and water some pot of flowers and then send a list of his family problems. He only comes around when he needs money. The last time, I didn’t have money to give him and I never saw him again. 

Even the vulcanizer that I give 1k, 2k, or 3k every time he corrects my tyre pressures, this morning, I didn’t have any cash to pay him, he kept me waiting for over 20 minutes just because of N200. 

When I study the behavior of people, it intrigues me. This is why I pay very keen attention to studying them. It’s something so strange yet so unbelievably fascinating and ridiculous. 

What’s most intriguing, however, is how people, mostly those at the lower echelons of society, value only money and not the most important thing which is relationships. A terrible mindset. Such a sad shortsightedness. 

This is true too for some friends and family members. They love you because your nipples are available for their milk. Once it dries up, you become another market square topic. 

Their loyalty is for sale. 

Their love is for the highest bidder.

Their beliefs are for the things that bring them the most glaring hope. 

It’s funny, yet, so true.

CHOLERA OUTBREAK; LASG calls for precautionary measures

LASG CALLS FOR PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AGAINST CHOLERA OUTBREAK

Lagos State Government has issued a call for heightened vigilance and the adoption of precautionary measures to prevent the spread of a potential cholera outbreak in the State. This call follows an excess of severe gastroenteritis cases reported in Lagos in the last 48 hours.

Speaking on the surveillance reports reaching his desk in the Ministry of Health, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed that cases of severe gastroenteritis have been reported in communities around Eti Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Kosofe LGA, resulting in about 60 hospital admissions and sadly five deaths have been recorded mainly from patients presenting late with extreme dehydration.

“We have activated a statewide heightened surveillance and response. The Ministry of Health Directorate of Environmental Health and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) have been alerted to investigate a possible water contamination source in the Lekki Victoria Island axis. We suspect a possible cholera outbreak; however, samples have been taken for confirmation. As of April 28, 2024, Nigeria reported 815 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths across 25 states.”

The Commissioner noted that following recent rains, Lagos State has seen a notable increase in cases of severe vomiting and watery stools, adding that urban slums and crowded areas with poor sanitation are particularly at risk.

Prof. Akin Abayomi explained that cholera is a highly contagious disease that causes severe diarrhea and can be life-threatening, adding that it poses a significant health burden in areas with poor water treatment and sanitation, and could impact Lagos State.

“Cholera spreads through direct transmission by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and indirect transmission due to poor sanitation and lack of handwashing. Symptoms of cholera include severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, rapid dehydration, muscle cramps, fever and sometimes collapse,” he said.

According to him, treatment options for cholera include rehydration using Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) for mild to moderate dehydration. Intravenous Fluids is used for severely dehydrated patients given only in medical facilities and supervised by medical personnel.

“To prevent cholera, citizens are urged to ensure safe drinking water by boiling, chlorinating, or using bottled water, and avoiding ice products made from untreated water. Maintaining proper sanitation by using toilets, safely disposing of feces, and avoiding open defecation is crucial.

“Practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and clean water regularly, especially before eating, preparing food, and after using the toilet, is essential and following food safety guidelines,” the Commissioner advised.

He enjoined citizens to rely on the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and accredited local health facilities for guidance, advice, and updates on prevention, treatment, and management. He added that suspected cases can be reported via the following emergency hotlines: 08023169485, 08137412348, or by using helplines 767 or 112.

While emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene and taking proactive measures to prevent cholera outbreaks, Professor Abayomi promised to keep the public informed and restated the commitment of  the Government of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensuring the health and well-being of its citizens. “We urge everyone to adopt these preventive measures and report any suspected cases promptly to safeguard our communities,” he stated.

 He had clothes he kept for the office. The clothes were often old with the collar torn. He wore very old shoes. He never used a good perfume. He lived in a 2 bedroom flat in a not so decent neighbourhood.  

I tried to persuade him to change jobs. To earn more so he could live better. He would thank me and tell me he is seeking work. I went to visit him at his office. He told me to park far away and walk. I wondered why. I did not. 

I had parked and was walking upstairs to meet him. Then the guard called me. I walked back. My friend’s boss was at the car park asking who owned my car. I identified myself. I laughed. My friend was unhappy with me for parking inside the office. His boss conducted an audit of who owned what car. If you drove a fancy car, he would sack you. If you had kids in expensive schools, you would be dismissed. If you dared to dress well, you must be stealing. God forbid you owned a house, he would lock you up.

My friend had worked there for 15 years. He understood the rules and played with the expected facade. Under dressed and under lived.

Well one day, he resigned his appointment. He was going out on his own. The next week he moved into his own home. A duplex with 4 flats attached. He had two cars parked there. Decent cars. We had a party. 

The next Monday his former boss arrested him for fraud. Try as he pushed nothing was missing. The boss spent money to find evidence of fraud. The money was spent in vain.

My friend is enjoying life now. Really living. I asked him if there was some “dodgy deals”. He smiled..,”would I ever tell you? Demola there are people who do not want those that work with them to make progress in life. But they mostly always fail. You can’t keep people down no matter how hard you try” “our boss even takes our names to juju men to lock our future, but see…

 The secretary to the govt of the federation, one of the top seven most powerful people in the country, is on video lamenting and complaining that the minimum wage request is too high because he can’t pay his FOUR drivers 100k monthly salary.

Yes, you read that right.

FOUR drivers for one man.

One man wants to have four drivers but is not ready to pay them a reasonable salary for those drivers to support their own families.

One man wants to have four drivers that he can continue to pay peanuts while they continue to slave away their entire lives for him.

These are the people that tell you the average nigerian that you need to cut down your standard of living because the country is broke.

These are the people the dubious shameless nigerian “intellectuals” defend and turn around to attack the poor masses for.

These are the people who tell you the govt is too broke for the poorest people to have a better minimum wage and a better life.

These are the parasites who do not mind to suck the blood of the poor dry, as long as they continue to live fat at the every expense of the same people they claim to serve.

Any time one deranged “intellectual”lunatic tells you the govt is too broke or the country is too poor for the average Nigeria to be paid better wages, please remind them this is the same country where senators are paid about 30million a month and where govt officials casually have 4 drivers.

Just think about it:

This is someone who is a two term ex-governor, an ex-senator, an ex-minister, and currently he is SGF. Essentially this is a man whose entire livelihood and a significant part of his entire life has been and is still completely funded by the nigerian govt. 

He is not asking for the govt to cut down on funding his excessive frivolous lifestyle where he has 4 drivers, but he would like the 4 drivers to continue living like paupers. Nigerian politicians are mostly terribly callous, incredibly stupid, and extremely wicked. They really hate us the people.

Anyway, one day will be one day.

The deranged thief pretending to be a masquerade will go out to the marketplace as usual. But the people will no longer be afraid of the mask and the cane.

Let me tell you a little story.

Back in 2012, for those of you who were too young to know, on New Year Day 2012, then President Goodluck Jonathan jacked up petrol prices from 65naira to 141naira. This caused more than 100% increase in petrol price and more than 100% rise in price of foods, goods and commodities.

The current clowns in govt today- who were opposition leaders at the time- rallied Nigerians and labour unions across the country in a nationwide multistate gigantic protests that brought the entire country to its knees. Those morons argued that fuel subsidy removal was insensitive, inhumane and unjust considering the hardship that Nigerians were facing. There was massive protests across Lagos, Lokoja, maiduguri, sokoto and many other places.

Many people got arrested, about 17protesters were reportedly killed and eventually the protests were forcefully dispersed when the govt rolled out tanks onto the streets and settled for a pump price of 97naira after dialogue with labour unions- a “dialogue” many saw at the time as some form of a sellout by Labour (which is why many still don’t trust the NLC till today. But that’s another day’s talk).

Fast forward to 2015;

The emergency “defenders of democracy” and “friends of the masses” dislodged President GEJ in the elections heavily influenced by USA interference, on the back of the OccupyNigeria2012 as it was called as well as the boko haram kidnap of the 276girls and the party APC won. 

By 2023,

These criminals have been in power for 8years and have successfully made Nigerians lives worse and miserable with far more people running abroad for greener pastures even if it meant menial degrading undignified jobs. It’s at least better to be alive with a means of livelihood abroad than to stay at home and die of inevitable starvation.

By June 2023;

Shortly after the handover;

The newly “elected” government announced a sudden knee-jerk removal of petrol subsidies. This sudden thoughtless reckless announcement caused the average petrol price in Nigeria to immediately reach 530 naira per liter, a drastic increase of 208percent from the preceding year. This caused worsening inflation, rising cost of living and untold hardship. There was zero protests or pushbacks apart from a few memes and jokes on twitter. Like the proverbial frog in boiling water, Nigerians just lived with the hardship.

Today in June 2024;

After one year of being in power and doing absolutely nothing to improve the lives of masses, petrol price is 800naira, one loaf of sliced bread is 1,500Naira; four pieces of tomatoes is 1,000naira, one bucket of garri is 4,000naira (all generally an increase of about 3-4times what it all used to be). And all of this while the minimum wage is barely 1 dollar a day.

Today, the labour unions announce a nationwide strike, and the govt in power is threatening jail and labelling the unions and workers as criminals.

Now interestingly, these little pharaohs in govt today were the spearheads and architects of the 2012 nationwide civil disobedience on the exact same basis of cost of living crisis due to petrol prices.

Anyway I write all that to say,

Let nobody blackmail you into thinking that standing up to a tyrannical oppressive insensitive govt is wrong or unjustified.

They did exactly the same thing in 2012. They brought Lagos down to its knees- which was and is the economic powerhouse of the country.

It is a shame that those who rode on the anger and the voices of the people to get into power now want to strangle the people and bury their voices.

Don’t fall for it.

Speak for your right.

You are a citizen not a slave.

It is slaves that are threatened with jail and death if they disobey, resist or speak up.

Even Nebuchadnezzar will express shock at the kind of atrocities this political class has gotten away with.

You have a voice. Use it. Speak up.

You have a right to speak. As citizens. As freeborns. Not on your knees. Or in chains. Or like slaves.

The choice is yours.
