( óyínbó sú óná, ó bó'ná jé )

- Shogo Oloshunde

I spoke with my maternal grandmother a few minutes ago,

Though in her 90's, Mama is still very active, strong and have a memory

She is 'anticipatory' about her departure while telling me what to do when that time comes,

I always remind her she has some unfinished business with me in particular, and she always assure me she will wait for 'them' ( as if me and her control her life duration 😁😂😀 )

If you have such Grandma, you can't just but look forward to calling her, of course, she renders my óríkí translated as ( praise poetry ) personally I have refused to accept some translation like cassava flakes as Garri, beans cake as ákárá etc if bread is bread and we have accepted it as such, pizza is pizza and we have accepted it such, we shouldn't be looking for 'English' name for gbégírí, éwédú, éfó ríró, ofe owerri, afang, atama, fisherman soup etc. They are some parts of my óríkí I enjoy and read along as she chant it and she said to me on this particular day, ó tí mó óríkî árá é ( You know your self eulogy ) I smiled and reminded her after years of reading it to me regularly, I should know some part of it, if not all.

But there's a particular part she got to,

I used to laugh each time the eulogy get there in the past, but it makes more meaning on this day to me because it sums up what Africa is 'suffering' from on covid-19, especially this new Omicron strain

Ómó óyínbó sú óná, ó bó'ná jé.

That part, ask your Yoruba friend for interpretation.

It's just display weak leadership across board on the continent, our Leaders only find voice during globe trotting and when to go to seek for aids/grants/loan

As a continent, We need to chart a new course.

OMICRON

The news of new covid-19 strain came with mixed reactions, expectedly, the discussion on the virus and it's fatalities has become like a myth especially in our part of the globe.

After a 'scare' last January, I decided to get the vaccine as soon as it was made available, it almost turn to a battle as I was 'denied' taking the vaccine initially even when people weren't turning up and fear of conspiracy theories, eventually I got the Jab and I'm fully vaccinated since June.

When the Omicron news broke,

I had a discussion with a friend in which I told him as soon as Nigeria is mentioned anywhere with Omicron, there will be a confirmation that we have the strain here 😁😂 my 'prophethood' has been confirmed many times and the latest is just an addition.

As usual,  I tried to reach out to a few friends and relatives to be more careful and take necessary precautions, My Aunt that sells at Idumota gave a super duper response, and if you know how busy Idumota market is, you will understand her position

There are People who haven't use nose mask once since the covid-19 menace started, they have been going in and out, no mask, not vaccinated and people aren't dropping on the streets, we have heavily crowded areas like Mushin, Ajegunle, Orile-iganmu, Badia etc and they haven't been a corresponding outbreak of the virus there.

However it's worthy to note,

Apart from my personal experience,

I know people who have died from covid-19 and I equally know people who recovered from it

Whichever side of the divide you have chosen, whatever you have decided to believe or yank off, whatever choices you have made on the virus,

The lies, the half-truths and full truths,

Do whatever it is to stay alive and healthy

Remember,

E ni ba ma royin ógún, ki ba ógún lo ( The person that will tell story of a battle, will not die in the battle )

The working hours decided to end earlier than schedule, so I sat down in one of my several 'ábété' I choose to take a drink different from my usual bottle, so I don't get addicted 😃😀,

A korope stopped I'm front of where I'm, occupants are police officers, one came down and went in other direction,

I was holding on to my phone, So I decide to take the phone down so I don't get harassment of trying to get a photo,

Few minutes later, one of the got down, came in my direction, I wasn't bothered or shaken since I don't have anything to hide, he went to the woman and asked,

Do you have Ijaw? She said yes, Ijaw is a local schnapps in small plastic bottle, he paid and left,

My philanthropic self 😃😀, would have pay for his drink, it's cheap afterall, but this is during his working hours, with uniform, sorry Polo, that's why I couldn't capture his name and I don't want to indulge him at the same time

So if you're looking for one of the several cause(s) of ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE I just told you one.

An Open Letter to President Buhari and NASS on $4B, €710 loan

 My Opinion

An Open Letter to President Buhari and NASS on $4B, €710 loan

President Buhari write NASS to request approval to borrow another $4B, €710m loan has created several uproar in the Nation,

According to the letter, the borrowing is an addendum to 2018-2020 borrowing plan and that his administration needs to borrow more funds to meet "emerging needs of some critical projects". The projects listed in the external borrowing plans are to be financed through the sovereign loans from the World Bank, French Development Agency, Exim Bank and IFAD.

This request comes barely two months after the National Assembly approved his earlier request to borrow $8.3B and £400M loans

Karl Marx made us to understand that "Class Conflict" is apparent in a society where ruling class keeps riding the less affluent.

Upon return to Democratic rule in 1999, at the tail end of President Obasanjo administration, He ensured he reached a deal to pay off the accumulated debts alongside 16 other countries in 2006.

As at now,

The debt profile is 33tr and the President seek another 2tr, which according to details accrued on Debt Management office website,

That means total debt under the Muhhamadu Buhari lead administration since 2015 excluding the recent request is #20.8tr and servicing gulps #10.26tr.

His administration keep justifying the request on using it to build infrastructure in the Nation.

However,

The more a Country borrows, the poorer the citizens become, A country keep downgrading in the economical sphere is she chooses loan borrowing as a way of remaining solvent. It is a stimulation of transfer payment that discourages the citizens from working.

An economy should rather face a natural decline to discover its own potentials. Singapore, China, Japan are a few examples of Countries that have gone through such and have risen from it.

Borrowing external loans admist decline in the Nation currency against the USD, GBP, EURO and other major currencies while inflation rate are in double digits, food prices have doubled, that's not good, and this ha more impact more than the exchange rates of the Naira to other foreign currencies.

Whereas the Government need to secure the nature , reduce the overbearing cost in doing business, the business environment can equally be hostile, over taxed and over regulated in some cases.

In as much as we need to build infrastructure,

We also need to apply the conventional wisdom of WHEN YOU ARE IN A HOLE you stop digging.

We need to the economic team to come up with a well detailed plan other than borrowing at every point, we need to look inward and create enabling environment to attract investors and empower SMEs to start producing to sustain local consumption.

The President and NASS needs to be reminded that loans are not grants, hence they are repayable,

With dwindling prices of Oil and output cut options OPEC usually adopts alongside many countries reducing usage of oil, how solvent will the Nation be when we have accumulated so much loans in the name of building infrastructure ? Repaying loans should go beyond building road with borrowed funds with no alternative route and the only repayments plan is toll gates, As a Nation, we have perchant for allowing public edifice to rot away due to lack of proper maintenance or not putting it to proper use, the list is almost endless and almost all states of the federation have a fair share of such.

At a time like this, what the Nation should look into is Public Private Partnership ( PPP ) for several infrastructural development, create an enabling environment, invite investors to bid, regulate the process under law and ensure all agreements and standards expected are carried out. We won't just have companies jostling to bid, but we will get quality infrastructure that will be properly maintained.

DOLLARS TO NAIRA; A CALL FOR HOLISTIC APPROACH

DOLLARS TO NAIRA RATE; MANY UNTOLD TRUTHS.

The worst illiterate is the political illiterate. He hears nothing, sees nothing, takes no part in political life. He doesn't seem to know that the cost of living, the price of beans, of flour, of rent, of medicines all depend on political decisions. He even prides himself on his political ignorance, sticks out his chest and says he hates politics. He doesn't know, the imbecile, that from his political non-participation comes the prostitute, the abandoned child, the robber and, worst of all, corrupt officials, the lackeys of exploitative multinational corporations. - Bertolt Brecht

The fact remains one of the numerous campaign promises of President Buhari in 2015 was dollars to Naira exchange rate his personally frown at why the rate should be above #200 then he was even quoted to have said he will make it 1 to 1 during a rally in Owerri though that was later debunked by his media aides, but that doesn't dispel the disdain Mr. President has towards high rates of dollars to Naira, unfortunately, the reverse has been the case as there has been a free fall for the rate and except right approach and proper fiscal policy respite and pressure on the Naira might continue.

The current Government added more pressure and created room for multiple exchange rates when in 2016 they came out with a policy to give dollars at 'subsidized' rates to those going on Pilgrimage, it was unprecedented and you will wonder how or perhaps what pilgrimage contribute to the Nation's economy to have been that 'honoured' whereas manufacturers and other exporters equally got different rates and that decision marks the beginning of a chaotic exchange rates. Saudi Arabia for comparison pumps and average of almost 10m bpd, with less than 35M population, have a GDP of over $700B and per capita of $23K, whereas we pump less than 2M bpd, with a population of over 200M GDP of over $450B while per capita is $2,100

Another of such is petroleum subsidy which translates into almost $300 monthly, Whereas Mr President before his election into office in 2015 affirmatively said he doesn't understand what subsidy means and it's pure scam, his administration has been paying that same 'scam' for 6 years, only the recently passed PIB by the National Assembly which he signed will alter that.

Also, contrary to several claims of diversification of our economy to generate other non crude oil incomes, the fact according to many multiple reputable reports obtained online, sales of crude oil still account for over 80% of the country revenue.

Our bank cards 'used' to be a valuable tool for transactions on several merchant website and many easily from the comfort of their home use it to pay for good and services without needing to exchange to dollars, the official rate is applied and bank charges incurred, that was initially reduced to maximum $1,000 monthly and thereafter to a paltry $100 maximum, What several Nigerians don't understand is, many have professional bodies, association and organisations that require annual subscription payment, many have to resort to sourcing dollars from BDCs and black market and then obtain a dollar card to be able to maintain their subscription since banks won't give you dollars to pay your subscription and ATM has been restricted these and many of such policies are the reasons behind this multiple rates. The DG of WTO Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala during her first official visit to the Country after her appointment was ratified bitterly complained and kicked against having multiple exchange rates.

Unfortunately, many Nigerians were made to believe our taste for foreign items is putting enormous pressure on our currency, if only they do a background check and obtain official records of such importation which already shows massive decline in the last 5 years they will be suprised our citizens purchasing power is diminishing amidst massive poverty in the land. It might be the perfect time to look into the issue of estacode of Government officials which is in 'hard currency' too

If this Government is serious about the country economic woes and wish to turn it around, it's economic team needs to create new strategies as it seems they have been trying trial and errors and result have keep reflecting in errors and safe the Nation economy because we are at this level due to their decisions, actions and inactions.

CARE FOR YOUR VALUES, MY FRIEND

A YORUBA POEM OF J. F. ODUNJO

Care for your values (character), my friend:

Wealth often departs a home,

Beauty will fade from the human body

Rich people today may become very poor tomorrow.

Wealth and riches are restless as the sea.

They soon depart from a household

But your values continues with you to the graveside.

Money has no value for you

Your character is the beauty of your humanity.

If you have riches without character,

Who dare confide in you in doing good?

Even if you are an amazingly attractive lady,

If you are far off values appreciated by the society,

Who dare marries you as a wife?

Or if you are a crooked fellow (A dupe or scam)

Even if you are vast in knowledge, of

Who dare engage you in profitable business?

Care for your values,

my friend,

Good character (manners) surpasses equation of knowledge,

Society prefers only people of good virtues.

Africa Monarchy Leadership

I saw a post on Gaddafi last weekend and switch to his Wikipedia page for further readings,

While reading his pages,

Idi Amin and Mobutu Sese Seko flashed through my mind,

When I was done with Gadaffi's I took turn to read theirs, I further read that of Kabila and their likes. I didn't bother going near Mugabe and others that fall in such categories because their stories always look similar.

I'm still wondering how I missed Idriss déby? Possibly because he was still alive then anways

First,

The African democracy is WEIRD, there's several strange things about it and it's evident in the continent, Also if you wish or decide to stay in power as long as you wish or till you die,

Don't become a President, or when you become one, create the Monarchical Government like what is obtained in England, Spain, Belgium, Saudi Arabia etc,

Prime Ministers or whatever title you ascribe to it,

It's funny to have Leader's stay in power for 20,25,30 years and more and still clinging to power at all means despite losing tune with modern government and citizens needs.

I still wonder what the likes of Paul Biya, Ywoweri Museveni & co are still hanging on to do?

Unfortunately,

Most of them scheme to get replaced by either their wife or Children,

What exactly is our offence on this continent ?

SPECIAL APPEAL TO NIGERIANS/LAGOSIANS ON PROTEST AND COUNTER-PROTEST - Ebun Olu Adegboruwa

SPECIAL APPEAL TO NIGERIANS/LAGOSIANS ON PROTEST AND COUNTER-PROTEST

WHEREAS:

It is reported in the news media that there are calls for protest and counter-protest, at the Lekki Toll Gate, slated for Saturday, February 13, 2021;

AND

The 1999 Constitution, in its section 39, has granted to every person, the right to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and to impart ideas and information, without interference.

NEVERTHELESS,

I will like to plead most passionately, that the protest and counter-protest be shelved, at least for now, based on the reasons stated hereunder.

ONE

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry is still sitting and it is yet to make any finding or recommendations, on the Lekki Toll Gate Incident of 20th October, 2020, beyond the majority and dissenting decisions of 6th October, 2021, all of which are purely interlocutory.

TWO

The alleged bloodshed, mayhem, repressions and violence of October 2020 in general, should not be encouraged to be repeated again.

THREE

The Panels of Inquiry that were set up were all done in response to the EndSARS five for five demands. It will be good to await the decisions of these Panels.

FOUR

A protest or counter-protest at this time, may work to jeopardize the overall work of the Panel, the witnesses appearing or to appear, the testimonies, the investigations or even affect its ultimate assignment.

FIVE

I’m concerned about the consequences of protests and counter-protests, at the same location, in relation to security and likely violation of COVID 19 protocols, given the rising wave of the pandemic, in Lagos State especially, where most economic, social, educational and other activities, are partially grounded, presently.

SIX

The points made for and against interlocutory decisions of the Panel have been noted and they will be collated for necessary action, in consideration of the final report of the Panel.

SEVEN

While the assignment of investigating the Lekki Toll Gate Incident of 20th October 2020 is yet to be concluded by the Panel, it will be premature to proceed on it, as the basis of renewed calls for protest and counter-protest.

EIGHT

It is safer for now, for the Lagos State Government and its agencies, the EndSARS group and indeed all those concerned with the Lekki Toll Gate Incident, to await the final report of the Panel.

NINE

I therefore plead that the protest and counter-protest slated for Saturday February 13, 2021, or any other date, be put on hold to abide the final report of the Panel.

TEN

I appeal to all security agencies, especially the police and the army, both respondents before the Panel, to embrace caution and demonstrate utmost respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens, including protesters, counter-protesters and non-protesters alike.

A people united, cannot be defeated.

Yours sincerely,

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN

Fry that egg.

FRY THE EGGS NOW, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

A friend told me a story of how her mother called her around 10pm and asked her to quickly fry  eggs for her. She said she told her mother she was too tired and pleaded with her to allow her fry it in the morning. The mother insisted on eating the egg that night but the lady prevailed and the mother kept quiet over the matter and went to sleep.

Early the following morning, the lady went into the kitchen and fried few eggs, well garnished and with fresh fish. She knocked her mother's door to serve her the scrambled egg; with hot tea. There was no answer. She forcefully opened the door and woke the mother up to eat her egg, but the mother was dead !!!

She screamed !

She shook her !

She shouted, " Mummy!Mummy !, Stand up and eat your egg. I even made hot tea for you with it, mummy I am sorry," Hot tears rolled down her cheeks like a mighty torrential rain r. It was too late !

Her mum was gone!

She said, that scene of that night when her mum was practically begging her to fry egg for her kept hunting her memory for a long time and she always felt she was the cause of her mother's death.

If she had known that, that would be the last meal her mum would asked for and ate from her, she would  never have delayed in frying it for her that night !

Friends, what "eggs" are you asked to fry and you are saying you will "fry"it tomorrow ?.

Who do you need to call now, text now, chat with, or make  peace with and you are still saying," No, I will do it tomorrow, next week, when he/she apologises first, etc"?

What if you wake up tomorrow and that person is gone ? Or what if you never woke up tomorrow ?

Is your spouse/love, dad, mum, partners, children, neighbours calling, calling you for help / forgiveness right now and you want to delay till tomorrow before 'frying the egg' for him / her / them and you're still insisising that it "until the Lord comes"? What if the opportunity is no more there tomorrow ?

Brothers and Sisters, gather yourself together;  whatever "eggs" you need to "fry" today, go ahead and 'fry' it !

This time last year, no one ever thought of it that there would be a Covid-19 that will wipe up an entire generation, destroy and put economies on their knees and change the course of actions of the individuals and nations. Some people that we never thought would die in the next 20 years are gone; the mighty and powerful people, the rich and the ordinary. It is still going on and we pray that God forgives and heal the world.

No one can guarantee tomorrow; we only have Now! Tomorrow may be too late!!!

Please "Fry the egg" now, for the evil of the day, is enough for the day.

Have a wonderful day and receive GRACE to end this season STRONG

.

God bless you

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI BY THE ALAAFIN OF OYO, OBA LAMIDI OLAYIWOLA ADEYEMI III

Yoruba Question in Nigeria Conundrum

Your Excellency,

I have never been timid or shy of my total support for the success of your administration to deliver the country to the Promised Land.

My confidence had always been based on Your Excellency’s ability, fitness and competence in leading the country to the Promised Land, where Law and Order prevail, individual liberty is guaranteed, economic well-being of the citizens is assured.

That my confidence in Your Excellency remains unshaken to date. In recent time however, I am worried about the security situation in the country, especially in the South West geo-political zone, nay the entire Yoruba-speaking area of the country including Kwara, Kogi and Edo states.

This has to do with the incessant and increasing menace of Fulani herdsmen that have laid siege in almost all the highways of Yoruba land. Whether in Owo, Akure, Ilesa/Ife-Ibadan road or Ibarapa zone and Ijebu area of Ogun state, the story is the same.

I have held series of consultations with opinion moulders and eminent Yoruba leaders across board about the menace of these cattle herdsmen with such assault like raping of our women and in some occasions, in the presence of their husbands. That is apart from massive destruction of our agricultural lands; which ultimately points to imminent starvation.

On top of it all is the menace of professional kidnappers usually in military uniforms. What is more worrisome about the kidnapping notoriety is what looks like impunity which these kidnappers enjoy their nefarious activities.

After due consultations with Yoruba leaders and as the pre-colonial head of the Yoruba nation, we are worried by the audacity of these lawless people in effecting their illegal acts in broad daylight on our usually bushy highways without any arm of security being able to do anything.

Worse still is the confidence with which they demand ransoms and collect such illegal levies atthem designated spots without any arm of security being able to lay siege on them as it was the practice in the recent past.

Now, we cannot even talk of parading suspects, when in actual sense, no major arrests have been made in this part of the country. Without arrests, we cannot talk of their facing of the law.

Unfortunately, and painfully indeed, in the face of the apparent helplessness of our security agencies, where do we go from here?

It is at the wake of this manifest frustration of our people that our people have found it unavoidable, even though reluctantly to resort to alternative measures to safeguard their lives and property.

Suffice to say that is most part of Yoruba land, their pre-colonial military structures have not been totally collapsed. Hence, such structures like Odua People’s Congress, Agbekoya and other vigilance groups.

Having stated the above, and having established my premise as a stakeholder in your administration in the firm belief that we all believe in the Nigeria project, kindly permit me, Mr President, to make the following points and submissions as the Alaafin of Oyo, the King and Head of all Yoruba at home and in the diaspora and the Chief Custodian of Yoruba culture and values.

The people of Yorubaland in the traditional six State of the South-West geo-political zone and extending to some parts of Kogi, Kwara and Edo State live in palpable fear because of new wave of insecurity of life and property they now witness on a daily basis and which is alien to them. This new uncomplimentary development is not unrelated to the new wave of criminal activities usually associated with banditry, armed robbery and lately, kidnapping and rape of genuinely innocent and law abiding citizens.

I remember when these nefarious activities were first noticed in Oyo/Oke Ogun area of Oyo State, I took proactive steps to stem the tide and to amicably normalize relations between farmers and herders. Our initiative succeeded because we were dealing with genuine farmers and herders who had a commitment to Nigeria and who were interested in promoting their economic activities in a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria.

However, it is becoming obvious that the nature and character of banditry and kidnapping today are different from what they used to be.

Today, it is not merely infraction in the course of doing business, but blatant and criminal violation of the constitutional right to life and liberty of innocent citizens of Yoruba land. A few publicly known instances will suffice.

Certain individuals were kidnapped along Erio-Aramoko road, Ekiti State. They were tortured and exposed to danger in the forest for upward of two weeks.

These victims included the Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikole Branch, Adeola Adebayo whose decomposing body was eventually found after a ransom price of four million Naira had been paid.

Two officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps both Yoruba were picked up along Ilesa-Akure highway. In the process of this kidnap, an unnamed individual died.

Musibau Adetumbi, a legal practitioner based in Ibadan was going to attend an Appeal Court session in Akure when he was kidnapped along Ilesa-Akure highway. Professor Adegbehingbe, a surgeon at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife was abducted along Ibadan-Ile-ife highway. Dr. Muslim Omoleke, the Administrative Secretary of the National Electoral Commission was kidnapped around Ilesa, Osun State.

Mr Ayo Oladele, an employee of Guinness Nigeria and an Old Student of Christ School, Ado-Ekiti was abducted and taken away and lately, Dayo Adewole, son of a member of your 2015-2019 executive council and Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole was kidnapped on his farm at Iroko, a village along Ibadan-Oyo road.

There are many other instances of kidnapping, raid, rape and banditry not publicly known but which were reported to the Police and other law enforcement organizations.

As ugly as the picture above seems to be, the people of Yoruba land have remained generally peaceful and have resisted concerted efforts to push them into civil disobedience or adopting self-help mechanisms to protect themselves in their homeland.

They have demonstrated confidence in you and in your ability to stem the tide of these criminal activities. Yoruba have been restrained from believing the new found Islamization or Fulanization theory.

I am therefore writing to you, as a concerned stakeholder in your administration, to alert you and demonstrate to you, the urgency of the need to quickly respond to these and other issues concerning Yoruba land.

There is a general impression among opposition group that you are not known to take decisive and proactive steps in many matters of national interest and that you are not usually too disturbed about the gale of insecurity in Yoruba land.

May I also share with you the outcome or product of my wide consultations in Yoruba land to let you know, beyond what official security reports will make available to you, that there is a growing feeling of frustration, disappointment and despondency among our people, which if not immediately addressed, could lead to other serious national catastrophes and security challenges.

The present state of insecurity is posing enormous challenges to people’s engagements in other economic activities. The incessant and increasing menace on our highways and farms in Yoruba land is making farming and other economic activities hazardous and dangerous.

I recall with sadness that the Old Oyo Empire disintegrated because the slave trade introduced insecurity that made all other economic activities which had supported and enhanced the prosperity of Oyo to decline. It is never my wish that any part of Nigeria will ever go through this harrowing experience again.

Apart from massive destruction of farms and crops planted on them, the new wave of Fulani, pretending and disguising as herders have unleashed a reign of terror on Yoruba land.

They destroy crops, they kidnap men and women, violate and rape our women, right in the presence of their husbands. What this portends is definitely more than the simplistic interpretation of farmer/herder clash but the deliberate acts of hostility and criminality.

What makes it worrisome is the fact that for reasons best known to the Police establishment, they have not been apprehending or pretend to be in the defence of victims.

There is always a tendency to blame the victims and demonstrate helplessness in apprehending and bringing perpetrators to book to face the full wrath of the law.

It is even said, Mr President that these criminal pseudo herders go about their nefarious activities in broad daylight and many times in military uniform. They carry sophisticated weapons, the likes of which are only available to state actors.

There seems to be no doubt that the security apparatus of the country is both overstretched and rustic.

The philosophy of policing the State, protecting life and property and ensuring the existence of atmosphere that is conducive to life and living in Nigeria is lost on the security personnel. In Yoruba land, we are scared and worried about the outrageous audacity and effrontery of these criminal elements in carrying out their activities and without any challenge by security operatives.

In situation where money exchanged hands, the Police are adequately equipped to trace every paper money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Intelligence gathering concerning money paid as ransom should lead, finally to these criminals since they would eventually make transactions with the proceeds of their illicit and criminal activities.

As no major arrest of Fulani pseudo herdsmen has been made till date in Yoruba land, suspects cannot be paraded, let alone arraigned.

Even threatened a sitting traditional ruler and asked him to comply with certain directives go about as if they are indeed above the law and beyond arrest. It is unheard of that the State could be seemingly helpless in the face of these criminal assaults on its integrity and capacity to carry out the most sacred of its mandate; preserving life and property.

Mr President, let me assure you that the Yoruba people traditionally have what it takes to defend themselves and interests against all enemy attacks. What is of immediate concern is the possibility of these traditional self-help mechanisms of defence to conflict with legal and constitutional framework of the security organizations.

This is indeed my greatest fear, recluse the situation is fast degenerating into what could trigger complete breakdown of law and order under a constitutional state arrangement. Thus latent frustration must be nipped in the bud to avert a breakdown of the state system in Yoruba land.

I am aware that members of the Odua People’s Congress scattered all over the world are already being mobilized to stand in the defence of their land and are ready, willing and able to raise an army of volunteers as was done in 1968 by the Agbekoya.

It is trite saying that a stitch in time saves nine. For me, and relying on ancient wisdom, the dilemma of a possible breakdown of state authority and power could still be manages and the slide to anarchy arrested.

Historically, and even now, ethnic relations between the Yoruba and the Fulani had been managed adroitly through excellent statesmanship and participatory administration of inter-ethnic group relations. I have had many instances of settling farmer/herder disagreements in my Palace to the extent of instituting workable modalities for inter communal conflict management and peace building.

What is strange is the new wave of criminally minded Fulani groups. What is again disappointing is the ease with which these criminals will leave our country should there be anarchy in the land.

They have other places to return to, but Nigerians don’t have another country apart from here.

This is a serious national emergency, when Fulani herdsmen are engaged in criminality all over the country and the sitting federal government seems helpless and generally unperturbed by what is going on in the security organizations. There is no doubt that some leaders of these security organizations are either incompetent or bankrupt of ideas. Some are even compromised to take any decisive actions against criminals.

What we are witnessing in Nigeria is an anomaly because it is inconceivable that in the 21st century, when the whole world is making appreciable progress in providing enhanced standard of living, Nigerians will be living under the fear of banditry, brigandage, rape, kidnapping and terrorism.

Insecurity is posing a direct threat and imminent danger to living in Nigeria. It is capable of de-robing the country in the comity of nations and passing it off as uncivilized and barbaric.

As more and more countries issue travel restrictions to Nigeria and parts thereof, it is just a matter of time for Nigeria to lose whatever gains it has made in repositioning itself for more decisive participation in the international system.

I trust that you will not allow this to happen and will quickly and decisively take immediate steps to re-established confidence in your government and demonstrate the capacity of the state to protect all legitimate interests.

I wish you God’s guidance, courage and wisdom to do what is right, appropriate and necessary to build the Nigeria of our dreams, where no ethnic group is oppressed or taken for granted.

While urging you to take out time to read and consider this letter as coming from a stakeholder in your administration, I wish to assure you of the warmest regards of the Royal stool.

ÀGÀBÀGEBÈ (Hypocrisy)

 ÀGÀBÀGEBÈ

(Hypocrisy)
I have seen things in every facet of life that qualify as àgàbàgebè.
A man beats his wife for no plausible reason - now that's a crime in my estimation next to murder - but family gathers, talk blah blah blah and the woman is asked to kneel down and beg her husband.
Àgàbàgebè!
An elder messes up in the community, he is treated with kid gloves. They say eldership is used for nothing but to cheat the young ones.
Àgàbàgebè!
You are all in the same service. The pinnacle is the Directorship or Permanent Secretary or HLA or whatever. But you tell some that bcos they're not from the Admin line, they cannot reach that top.
Àgàbàgebè!
Y'all are in the same Nigeria. One country supposedly under one Constitution, but when it's time to dispense the opportunities that the nation offers in terms of jobs, advancement, political positions, or even admission for our children, a section is excluded. Reason: quota.
Àgàbàgebè!
A man moves on the road. One man with a convoy of 20 cars. It's a tight traffic, the sun is biting hard but they push you aside so his Majesty, his Excellency could pass. You're lucky if you don't get your side mirror broken. Big man zooms off all the same. Ẹni àmọ̀rí ì báà kú....!
Àgàbàgebè!
There is vacancy for positions in a public establishment like NNPC, CBN etc. No advert are seen these days. The big men just share the positions among their children, their wives and girlfriends. But oh, children of the downtrodden are enrolled in SURE-P, Yes-O, Ó-Yes and N-Power!
Àgàbàgebè!
There are schools now for the rich and poor. You are not told to send or not send your children to certain schools. The school fees regime will tell you that. This class demarcation of educational opportunities will bounce back on us someday.
Àgàbàgebè!
You crave that èṣù and bìlísì should not enter the village yet the baálẹ̀ sells Indian hemp, his wife sells illicit gin and their children extort money all over the place...
Èṣù has not only entered the village, it has built a huge mansion there!
The day we let the veil of hypocrisy be removed from our eyes, is the day we shall begin to have peace and move towards meaningful development.
Meanwhile, we trudge on in a misguided belief that all will be well when we are doing nothing to make all well.
Àgàbàgebè kò níí pa wá n'ilu yìí ó.
Omi Tuntun Ìgbà Ọ̀tun!
